The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has a comprehensive approach to diversity, inclusion and belonging focused on reflecting its vastly diverse audiences across Australia. The digital technology team is fully invested in creating a sustainably inclusive workplace and advancing women in technology.
The ABC is the national broadcaster of Australia. It launched in 1932 with a single radio service and has developed into a multi-platform media operation and internationally renowned public broadcaster. The ABC has become a much-loved part of the Australian society and its cultural fabric, broadcasting world-class news and current affairs, factual programs, live sports and major events.
The ABC is funded by direct grants from the Australian Government and run by a government-appointed Board, which is 50/50 gender-balanced and includes the incredible force that is Ita Buttrose, AC OBE, as its Chair.
Product & Technology (referred to internally as P&T) has one of the largest representations of cultural diversity across ABC and is committed to improving its recruitment, retention and leadership development practices and providing a diverse and inclusive workplace.
Project F is fortunate to be championed internally by the leader of ABC’s digital product teams, Joel Brydon and our executive sponsor, CDIO Damian Cronan, who says:
“Project F’s innovative approach to gender equity in technology and it’s approach to driving accountability is having a real-world impact on our measures around WIT at the ABC. Their dedication to actionable change and measurable outcomes is not just empowering women in tech; it’s paving the way for a more equitable and successful future for the industry overall.”
Interviews at the ABC for roles within Product & Technology typically run with the following process:
As an independent media organisation for all Australians, "Providing content and services of the highest quality lies at the heart of the ABC’s public purpose." Their values are:
The ABC appeals to people as an employer for specific reasons. It doesn't feel like your average commercial environment as its government funded and its core drivers are different to private corporate companies. As an independent media organisation, it has a reputation for serving the Australian public with high quality, unbiased factual news, culture and stories. The Digital Product environment itself is modern, welcoming and inclusive. People will thrive here if they desire purpose-lead, human centred products that reach, inform and impact millions of Australians every day.
